3.17 – Being honest with our children scenarios – feedback

Did you mention any of the following?

ScenarioWhat others said
1. It’s all about the money! “Right now I do not have enough money to pay for this trip. We can start saving now (whatever you can afford, for instance £2.00 per week) so the next time a trip comes up you may be able to go.” It is important that you do stick to this so don’t promise what you can’t do, because if you go back on a promise their trust in you is damaged.
2. Feeling under the weather “Mum is feeling a little bit sad and unhappy at the moment. It’s not your fault and you haven’t done anything wrong. Sometimes we all get unhappy and sad.”
3. Serious illness “Mary, the neighbour, is quite ill; she will be going to hospital to have some treatment so she may need some support. Perhaps we can help out by taking some food for her when she comes out of hospital.”
4. Single parenthood “All children have a mum and dad; I know your mum/dad doesn’t live with us, and you only see them sometimes. That’s the same for lots of children. Next time you could say that you do have a mum and a dad.”

Conclusion

Well done – you have completed Session 3. We’ve covered a lot of ground in this session. We learnt how we can influence and help improve our children’s lives to give them a better future, with improved achievement in school, good self esteem and letting them know what is expected of them. We’ve also looked at the importance of listening to our children and being honest with them.
