4.1 – Session 4. Growth and development

Parents discuss development endlessly – “Jo was out of nappies completely at 18 months.”, “Abdi didn’t crawl he just stood up and walked one day.”, “Sian could already read when he went to school.” …so on and so on.

What is growth and development?

Growth relates to size of the body such as height and weight. Development relates to gaining skills. There are four areas:

  • Physical.
  • Social and emotional.
  • Intellectual.
  • Communication and speech.

Parents need to help their children to make progress in these areas. Sometimes the help we can give our children is just to give them the space to do what they like, but at other times we might need to be more directive and really tell you children what they can and cannot do.

In your worksheet write at least two things you can do to help your child/ren with each of these areas of development.

Area of development
Physical
Social and emotional
Intellectual
Communication and speech
