Age restrictions..

Bubblegum
DoppleMe

I'm trying to find out, but not having much sucess, so does anyone know..

Are there any spesific laws concerning children watching age restricted films or playing age restricted games at home, I mean I know they can't watch them in the cinema or purchase games or films them selves from shops, but am I allowed to let them watch and play them at home, purchase them my self for them?

I do anyway, as I don't think letting them watch stuff like the Alien films or Zombie films is bad for them, in fact I think it's good for them as it stimulates their imagination, well it does mine anyway. My son is very much into the Alien films lately and playing the games and my daughter loves zombies. All this shows in the things they draw and talk about, to my mind in a very good way.

In fact the only thing I draw the line at is any sort of glorification of sexual violence, I find for example the Grand Theft Auto series of games inappropriate in their content. Having said that they both watched A Sunday in Kigali, but that doesn't glorify sexual violence it shows it for the horror that it is and after watching it with me, they were full of good questions.

But I just wondered where I stood legally seeing as my wife has in the past taken everything I do and tried to use it to disparage my parenting skills in court, unsuccessfully, but still it's disheartening having what I think is good for my kids questioned.

I'm still searching and if I find anything definitive I will come back and say, just in case anyone else was wondering the same.

Hi Bubblegum. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing it is down to the parents as to what their children watch. Personally, I wouldn't let C watch films with zombies etc, as I know he would be frightened. Then again, that could be me, that would be frightened, and thinking the same of him, hehe. He's never seen a sex scene either, the most he has seen is 2 people in bed kissing, and that would be in something like Eastenders or Corrie!!!

I've come to the same conclusion alisoncam, that basically it's down to the parent, it's just illegal to supply age restricted games and films and Cinemas have to comply with their licence to show films.

When confronted with sex scenes in films and such my kids jump up and try to cover my eyes with their hands.

Horror films don't scare me, good suspence ones make me cover my eyes sometimes, like peer through the cracks, but they don't scare me it's just the wating for the inevitable you know is comming.

There is an amazing film called 13 Tazameti where the protagonist is involved in a Russian roulette contest, that had me on the edge of my seat covering my eyes and cringing. : )

Hi Bubblegum

I am not aware of any specific law about what parents let their children watch. Extreme examples would come under the Child Protection guidelines (this document is a guide for Wales, see pp 8-9; each country will have its own guidelines but they are broadly similar), for example if a small child was exposed to hard-core porn then that would be a form of abuse. It is really for you to judge what is suitable for your children and it would only be brought into child custody proceedings if it was either extreme, there were definite, detrimental effects of your decision, or it was part of a general pattern of neglect/abuse.

Personally I think they key to it is being there with them so you can monitor what is going on and discuss any issues. It is often a good way to learn about controversial topics, by seeing a reference to them on TV or a game and then the parent gets a chance to chat with them about it. That's certainly what I have done with my boys.

My children cover my eyes too!  They know far too much!  Mind you, I'm the one most likely (and my fourteen year old) to sit in the kitchen if there's a spooky film on.  Daughter and youngest love them (youngest has as long as I can remember!).

I always used to have a bit of a giggle because when son was youger, and in bed, and I was watching late TV, if there was ever a sex scene he would choose that precise moment to burst through the door demanding a drink or moaning about a moth in his room. Once I turned it over quickly, only to find the other channel was a nature programme with mating deer also caught in the act Embarassed

Would it be a film worth using in schools to discourage young girls from pregnancy, Bubblegum? Laughing

It's about Daniel Pearls wife Mariane Pearl, concentrating on the time that he was kidnapped till his death.

I watched his killing online when it happened and it was the most harrowing thing I have ever seen, I wish I never saw it but you cant unsee what you have seen.

The film is very good and Anjelene Joli is amazing considering before that I just wrote her off as just another Hollywood actress blah de blah de blah, but the bit where she is told that her husband has been killed and how and her reaction I though was really good and convincing and it made me well up.

She does a convincing French accent too : )

Another good thing about the film is it's not judgemental, not really, it doesn't portray Muslims as screaming madmen with turbans running about going death to the infidels, like Steven Spielberg's Munich for example. Which considering the story is rather good and they could quite easily have made it a film about evil Muslims v's the free world, instead it's a very good film about a woman trying to get her husband back and having to deal with the media and government officials and ajencies.

I liked it : )
