Hi Kiera

I'm not sure how things are now, but my son had the middle rate disabled living allowance with his autism/Asperger's (he now has the lower rate).

With this new Personal Independance Payment (PIP) I believe your son would need to be awarded the daily living part of it, and then you would be able to make a claim fro Carer's if you are caring for him for over 35 hours a week.

I'm sure if you ask the question to the benefit advisor on here, they can be more certain.

Have you applied for this for your son?  I can only imagine how incredibly upsetting this is.

As I understand it

if he gets middle rate disability living allowance then I think you should get iit

if he gets higher rate then no you can not get it.

does he get DLA ? If so what level

DLA is basically for your son for things that can make his life better etc

CA the for the carer , that would be your money for caring for him

i would apply again for DLA if he gets it then you can apply for ca and that gets backdated for up to six months.

this is my understanding I may be wrong

can u email the benefit expert? Do we have one lol

Hello kiera, some great info from the others.

The first step, as they say, is to get DLA for your son. These are horrid forms to fill in so get the forms and get an appointment with your local Citizen's Advice Bureau (click here to find your local office)

Once his care needs have been "recognised" by the system, then you will be able to apply for Carer's Allowance.

It has indeed taken ages, kiera. At least you know the doctor has sent a report so it is underway.

"but then im at hoem cos no way i can leave him inn house on his ownin case he as siezure and hurts himself" I should think not! What sort of comment is this? Of course you shouldn't under ANY circumstances leave ANY child alone.

Hi One, Kiera is a very loving mother, very caring and protective and I think her child is not a very young child

Hi one and welcome along to One Space,

Skyflower is right keira's son is in his middle teens so at this age they would not ordinarily need or want to have a parent hovering over them constantly, sometimes it can be difficult to get a happy medium in these cases when young people need caring for but also want and need some independence to learn the skills they will need to live independantly.
