Hello, I'm here trying to help a friend in need.  She is a lone parent in receipt of WTC, HB and CTB. She has just been offered a flat (she lost everything in an accrimonious seperation), but she has no money to furnish it.  I have looked on benefits site, and it would appear that she cannot apply for help from Social Fund as is not on JSA etc.  Can anyone suggest where we can go to help this lady find a loan or grant with which to furnish her new flat???

Regards

Hi muselover, I dont know of anywhere to apply for grants but have you considered trying freecycle or freegle, these are both sites where people can recycle things they no longer need/want, you need to register with the site and it takes around 24 hours for your account to be up and running, I use it as do other members on here and it really does work, you can ask for items that you need and also give away things that you dont need.

If you google freecycle and freegle and put your town/city name behind it you will find one in your area.

Other will be along and they may have solutions to the loan/grant dilemaLaughing

I really do hope things move smoothly for your friend.  How brilliant you to help too.  Friends are priceless.

I was going to suggest freegle/freecycle too.

Good luck.

Hello muselover

Some good suggestions here! The main website for grants is Turn2us and it is very comprehensive but takes a while to get through all the info.

Most areas have a community furniture store where people such as your friend can buy things very cheaply (sometimes need a referral from an agency). Obviously I do not know where your friend is from, but if she phones her local Citizen's Advice Bureau then they will tell her if there is one in her area. She could also have a word with her Health Visitor as they often have connections that can help
