Hi i am a single parent 25 years of age my daughter is 7, i am curently on jsa but wanting to start a beauty course im not sure wether i can or not and finding it very difficult to get advice. I have heard that if i do a course it can not be longer than 16 hrs a week and if there is coursework or homework then that would be taking me over the 16 hrs a week. Also can i get funding for the course and the equipment i will be needing? Any help would be a big help, thanks.
Hi Louise i spoke to the advisor when i went to sign on but she didnt really have a clue because she wasnt a lone parent advisor i have a interview at the college today so im going to see what info i get from there then take it to my lone parent advisor who i am not seeing until the 24th jan now.
How frustrating for you, hope you get an answer at college, let us know??
i no and ok i will thanks for your help.
Hi there, i had my interview at college and was told that for people 24 and over are eligible for a grant to pay for courses equiptment and things this will only be repayable once you are earning £21k or more a year. Im still waiting for my appointment to see what the jobcentre says just thought id give you th info ive been given.
Aww thanks kellytaylor for giving us that information. That is interesting.
We then have to find out and weigh up how much we would be owing monthly if we did manage to earn over £21k and whether it would be worth it.
Hi kellytaylor, a client that i work with is currently on JSA and doing a hair dressing course, but this is a part time course, i think the expectation is that you can do a course but still have to be actively seeking work and that if you get offered a job you will be expected to leave the course if it did not fit around the working hours the job required, but i would still checkout what your advisor is saying as you can get different information from different centres.
Hello Kelly
You need to ask your adviser at the Job Centre about the course when you go to sign on.
With regard to help with funding, please see this article re Adult Learners
Another option would be to work 16 hours a week, move onto Working Tax Credit and do the course at the same time if it is not loads of hours.
