children and hospital operations

hatz
DoppleMe

My son is going to be going in to hospital on the 1st oct to have an operation on his toes... when he was born he had club feet which have droped down in to the normal foot postion now but he's been left with curly toes and there really quiet bad! he's always falling over and when he stands normaly with both feet pretty much together the last 3 toes are on there sides pushing in the the toe next to it, so he's now starting to get blisters from the other toes rubbing against them.

I was hoping that this was going to be done before he started school so he didnt have to have the time off for it and it would be all sorted out before he even got there but it seems not! lol i phoned thru to my dr to ask if he could chase it up and he did (well his secutary did!) and i got a message saying that they'd just put my son on the list for the opperation ... they'v had the all clear for the last 3 months just not put my son on the list grrrr!!!! but never mind! ... so we'v got an apointment for the 1st oct which means he might have to have up to 2 weeks off while it all heal's and sorts it's self out :O which also means that it might JUST be ready for when we go on holiday in leicestershire 1/2 turm which also means that he wont be in school for the whole of october by looks of things! but there we go just got to see how things go!

but i was wondering if any one else has come to having to send there children in to hospital for an operation (which i'm guessing they have!) my son's only going in on a day case so he wont be sleeping there or anything which is a good thing but he's still got to be there from 7:30 in the morning not eat for 6hr before the opp :O poor 4yr old! lol hopefully he'll be in straight away and out again pretty much an hr later then he'll be able to eat when he starts to feel like it!

Aww bless him!

Firstly, don't worry about the school thing, he will be fine, and settle in again quickly.

As for the hospital, it is likely they will let you stay there for the day. You will be with him until he goes to sleep and then as soon as he wakes up they should call you. My youngest had an op on his ears when he was two. The first time, he was just going to anaesthetic and there was a power cut in the town and the hospital switched to its own generator and all non-emergnecies were sent home. You can imagine how I felt, getting all worked up for nothing.

Anyway he had the op three weeks later. One thing that really helped is I got him a new Action Man and we played that Action Man was poorly and had to go into hospital too. One technique that works with children is to pretend the toy has been naughty, so you can tell the toy off a bit and say "but so-and so- (your child) isn't being naughty, he is a GOOD boy" The childn usually looks smug and behaves very well for a while.

When my son came round I heard his cry right from down the corridor, somehow you know it is your child and you can go to him and hug him. I had to stay in hospital with him for a couple of days, and sleep on a horrible yoga mat thing next to his bed, he was fine though Laughing

Hi Hatz. The poor little fella. I'm sure though that it'll be you getting more stressed than him! At least it's not an overnight thing, so you'll be able to make him comfy and fuss over him all the more at home. Like Louise says, you'll be able to stay with him until he falls asleep, and be there when he wakes up. School won't be a problem either, he'd have settled in by then, and he'll be eager to tell his friends all about the hospital!!! Hugs for you both.

Awww.  When my older two had gromits, the staff were fabulous, and as mad as it sounds, the children had a good time.

The ate as soon as they wanted too.

Thinking of you and your son here...

Hi hatz, the toy thing sounds like a great idea and books about other children in hospital.

When my daughter broke her leg, she was 3, my heart went out to her she was in so much pain, but I told her that when we finished at the hospital we would go and get her a Build a Bear, so from then on thats all she talked about, what it would look like, what she would name it etc etc. As it happened we didn't get the bear until about a fortnight later because it was pretty awkward trying to maneouvre her around!

I guess as long as he doesn't see that you are worried and that you portray that it is pretty normal to go to hospital and lots of kids do it and it will all be fine, just another day in the wide world, he will take on the same outlook!

Now what about you?  Are you going to buy yourself a good book? Some tasty snacks and a treat or two?? Laughing

lol i'm glad you asked about me cuz i'd not thought about that one bit! haha! so out of habbit to ask about me! lol well i got a book on the go all ready (doubt i'd finish it before then! lol VERY slow reader!) so will be takin that ... me mum's coming too (mainly for transport lol but also to be there for me of course!) and as for anything else i dont really know! lol

thats the sort of atitued i'm tryin to take on being this is an every day normal thing to do everyone dose it... at least some point in there lifes! ....... to be honest it's just the unknown that makes us worried eg the anisthetic i know he'll be having a genral so not that bad and so long as the opp gose well he'll be under for a max of an hr so it's not bad at all, but it's still that what if thats playing on my mind which i guess it would be on any parents mind if faced with the situation.

i'v decided on givin him some of his xmas pressys for it! lol i'v found him a JCB digger colouring book and he's got a 3D snakes and ladders game which he might end up with!! but will see when we get there! (the fact that it's less than a month away now is another matter!)

Hi Hatz,

My youngest son had to go into a hip spicer when he was four months old Cry. He had to have a general anaesthetic and I couldn't go into the theatre with him...it was awful, I cried like a baby and felt awful..he was probably the healthiest child on the ward and I was in bits. Its terrible when your child has to go into hospital!

However it can also be exciting...new machines, doctors and nurses showing them equipment etc, also like Anna said if your ok they will be ok, a bit of reverse psychology might work too 'only very clever and brave children get to have special doctors mend thier toes'. The gift idea sounds great too.

How are you feeling about the whole thing?

Hi hatz. Perfectly understandable to worry about the what ifs. I'm sure each and everyone of us would be the same. BUT, your son will be in excellent hands, and he'll be just fine. Its a straightforward op isn't it? I can only imagine what you are going through, and my heart goes out to you. During the operation, will your Mum be there with you? Perhaps you could grab a coffee, wander around for a while, and in next to no time, the nurses will be calling you in to see your little lad. I'm sure it will feel like the longest hour. Could you perhaps call a friend to take some time up?

I cried when my son went under general for dental, work one of the nurses had to walk me out and give me a glass of water and calm 'me', all that work they have to do and then they have to deal with a a grown man crying.

lol what we all like ay! but yes when it come to our kids we become compleat and utter wimps!!!!!!!!!!! i'm kinda starting to get a bit nurvey about it now but think thats cuz it keeps getting closer and closer to the day! all that i know he's goin to have done is to cut the tendans at the side of the toe next to the little toe simpols! lol there was talk at the start of the appointments that they will have to break the bone and re-set it which would mean that, that toe would stay the size it is now and never grow so when he would reach teenage yrs he'd have a foot with a tiny toe on it! but THANKFULLY they came up with the tendan cut!

OMW! machines. ... buttons. .... 4YR OLD! :O i'm goin to have my hands full getting him to leave all the buttons alone! haha! he's button mad and a bloke! haha! he sits in front of the telly at telly time hoggin the remote and he's worked out what channle he has on and how to get to it! lol he worked the dvd player out when he was 2 and 1/2 sending photos of me sleeping when he'd just turned 2 of my camera phone! haha! (poor taxi company getting all these 50 odd messages thru to there land line at 4am! haha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and me parents who at the time lived in leicester as they got a couple too! haha) (and my BILL i got thru :O OUCH! isnt the word! lol) so yeh my son's a bit of a button mad boy thankfully and hopefully he's only in for the day so shouldnt get up or in to too much trouble! lol

i'm glad that my son's opp will be a lot easier than my friends daughter at the end of oct, she's got to have her clef lip repaird so can see her later on goin thru what i am but in a way least i can tell her what to expect and all that.

i dont have any friends in burton where he will be having his opp, 70% of my friends live other places as notts brum and all that 20% round here when i am and the other 10% are on the internet! lol but mum is coming with me i did say that she can drop me off and go of to work but she said no i'll stay with you till he's sorted and ready to come home so thats a good thing at least but knowing what were like we'll both be sat there with our noses in books or one of us gone off etc! haha! but she'll be there for suport at least!

On the other side of life he's settled right down at school and straight in to school life! :D whoop! :D

yup! he left me standing there at the gates again! haha! with his school bag and lunch box! haha! so i went and locked his bike up and then stood there where he could see me and held his bags up in the air till he noticed and he stood there till his teacher said go and get them! haha! .... it's all cuz he likes to be first for everything! lol first out the door, first up the stairs, first in to class! lol he's goin thru that first first first first first stage! and why!!!!!!!! aarrgghh! i'll tell him why before he asks and he'll go WHY! the best one is why why! haha! 2 lots of whys! but there we go! lmao

yeh his toes of which last night when cutting his nails i realised the left one is a lot worse that what it use to be so glad it's all goin to be sorted the toe on his left foot is now curved round so much that it's pushing all his toes that it's making them grow inwards too :( so am really good it's being sorted out on the 1st oct!
