uk71

Hi I am uk71 and am new to this website. I am trying to appeal against only being awarded the lower rate of care for disability living allowance. I believe I need supervision throughout the day and even at night because i have constant obsessive thoughts that can lead me to be harmful to myself. Also I suffer from depression which can make me forgetful and a danger to myself and others, I suffer from learning difficulties and need help with reading, comprehension and carrying out tasks. I suffer from social phobia and need help with interacting with other people and pursuing social activities. Furthermore I suffer from agoraphobia and need help to go to unfamiliar places. Yet the DWP are not accepting that I don't need help for more than one hour a day. After having the decision reconsidered and not changed I am considering appealing to a tribunal. But I don't know how to strengthen my case, who can help or whether it is worth the headache especially as I am having problems getting my GP to write a strong letter, and not just stating my diagnosis, about how my conditions affect my daily living. This is even though I have informed him of the information he needs to know.

hello Uk71, are you a single parent? this site is for supporting single parents so I am presuming you are in this situation as you have posted on the site. I was wondering whether you had therefore included how your condition affects your care of the children and whether it would jeopardise your time with them if you emphasise your tendency to self-harm in any appeal you make? (just a thought)

As for how to conduct an appeal, I would suggest you seek support/advice from a local service that might be involved in your care, whether a Community Psychiatric Nurse, a voluntary support group co-ordinator or your local Mental Health worker as they will have more experience of dealing with these appeals

Good luck!

Hello BEEJAY1953,

Everything is changing at the moment with regard to benefits and the Benefits Agency is being much stricter about missed appointments (as you have found out to your cost Frown)

Can I suggest that you get in touch with our benefit expert - I have posted the link here for you. They may be able to answer your questions and inform you of your rights. You could also contact your local Citizen's Advice Bureau, and I'd also recommend that you have a look at other threads in this section of the forum if you haven't already. You could find something of real use to you in reading about other One Spacer's experiences.

Hope you have some good news soon.
