I found out today (not directly from him, although he's known for a while apparently, but because he happened to bump into our 12 year old daughter in town and casually mentioned it to her!!) that my ex husband in being made redundant at the end of the month.  Apparently he's very happy about this because having been there 16 years he's expecting shedloads of redundancy payment and is planning to take a few months' 'holiday'.  But if he's not working and earning, he won't be paying me any child support and that will knock a massive hole in my and my girls' budget.  I'm looking to save money wherever I can now and wondering if I should apply for council tax benefit.  I believe I am entitled to something but have never claimed before now - the forms are epic and you have to send so much paperwork off with them that I don't know if I can cope with that if I'm not likely to get anything back.  I can't find a website etc that will calculate for me whether it is worth applying or not - does anyone here know of one?

Hello ficurnow

Sorry to hear this, it is harsh when the parent with care suddenly gets their income cut like this.

Give this calculator a go, I have not done it myself but have had it recommended by a friend

Hi ficurnow, very nice to see you around again. Sorry to hear about the circumstances.

If your ex starts to claim job seekers allowance then you will still be entitled to a whopping £5 per week, which won't affect your council tax benefit.

I hope that the calculator that Louise linked to was useful, you can also ask our Money and Benefits Experts and our CSA Expert for personalised advice.

All of these benefit forms seem epic, but if you just set some time aside, they are not as bad as they originally seem and definitely worth claiming if you can.

Would your ex consider giving you a little lump while he is on holiday??Cool

Actually, panic over (I think.  For the moment!) because he's told our youngest (again, not communicating directly with me) that he is going to carry on paying me child support anyway.  I got the impression from what she told me he said that he hadn't even been planning to tell me he'd been made redundant (durr - this is a small town!) and he was a bit surprised that she had passed on to me what he'd said (again durr - this is the child who wears her heart on her sleeve and tells everyone everything!!)

Why can't some people just communicate?  (No - don't even bother answering that - LOL!!)

Ok I won't.......Smile

Well the main thing for you is that you continue to get your child support, which is a big relief.
