Sarahlouise

Hello

I am a single parent of one 6 year old. I am considering leaving my job as I am thinking about changing career path but I am worried that I will not be entitled to any benefits/support in the mean time if I do so? Can you give me any advice on this please?

Hello SarahLouise

You can claim Income Support and any attendant Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit as well as hanging onto your Child Tax Credit and Child Benefit until your child is seven. At that stage, you switch from Income Support to Job Seeker's Allowance and then you are expected to job-search and put under some pressure to apply for a certain number of jobs and directed to the Work Programme. With this in mind, you say your child is six, which means that you could have anything from one to eleven months to put your plan into operation. You are entitled to the Income Support even if you leave your job voluntarily.

Thank you so much for your replies, it has put my mind at rest! I tried to call the jobcentre but have not been able to get through to anyone with the correct information.

I am now going to do some more research into courses and put my plan into action!
