This is shocking! If single parents want to work they should be supported and helped to do so but it should be a choice. I am not surprised that Mothers particuarly Mothers of such small babies feel panic at the prospect of being bullied by the "help" on offer at Jobcentres. The incidious names given to some of the schemes will not trick anyone with any insight into the inreasing pressure put on anyone unlucky enough to require financial assistance. Fail and their children go hungry.
Single Mothers quite rightly feel panic because their childrens will be is at risk. Benefit reforms look increaingly like Benefit restrictions. Even those that want to do the "correct" thing can find themselves being tricked and found guilty of being non compliant. The punishments for non compliance with a jobcentres advisors help can be harsher than the punishments handed out to convicted criminals. Under these new rules Babys as young as 12 months can also be punished. All for their own good of course...
Sorry i did not make it clear the parent did not have to look for work in the end, just some miss informing about the new changes which is what i was trying to point out.
Unfortunately Pam some mums don't have the choice about if they work or not, restrictions on benefits for EU Nationals for example means that mums with small babies or children have to Job seek.
I think that it is a good thing for parents to be getting the time to do some additional training etc before they actually have to look for work, i'm somewhat concerned how it is actually going to pan out on the ground in terms of sanctions and consisitency across job centres on any flexiblities available to lone parents.
I recently had contact with a parent who's child was approaching one years old and she was told by the Job Centre of these up coming changes and was told that when her child turns one she will have to start looking for work which put the parent in a panic, so i'm hoping that JC staff are adequately trained in this new system before they start advising people on it.
