Hi all

Ok! here goes ...

From JSA with a child 13 into work 37hrs no problem (well maybe a little)

My question.. What on earth am i going to do ?... cannot find child care for half terms...

firstly let me say there are no family or friends to ask for childcare help that rules that question out. secondly yes i suppose being left for a few hours after and before school is just fine , it builds confidence and independence. However 37 hours a week from 8am leave till 6pm return Monday to Friday during the school holidays, its just not working there is nowhere to go and being locked in the house all day (with a key of course in case of emergency's) it would feel and i believe to be just sheer neglect.

13 year old just not ready for this amount of time on own therefore my question/s

can i go back on jsa and therefore which i am look for less hours

was on welfare to work programme they do NOT HELP!

it's all just gone horribly wrong ......

Hello onemumtenjobs, or may I call you OMTB? Laughing

Welcome along and you are facing something that a lot of parents of young teens face. I totally agree with you, a few hours here and there is great experience for them to be on their own and learn responsibility but full-time Monday to Friday is not suitable.

While you have a child in fulltime non advanced education (ie up to 18) you can work 16 hours per week and claim Working Tax Credit. I am not sure what the rules are about how soon you could have JSA if you gave your current job up voluntarily though, and I recommend checking this out by emailing our Benefits Expert (click)

I appreciate "look for another job" is not a magic wand solution though! If you went on JSA again, you would be put under pressure to apply for any old job whereas it is much better to find something that you don't mind doing and where the hours are more decent. In the meantime, I know there is half term looming. I am guessing you have already looked at whether you can have any days off that week? Whilst there are no handy family and friends to care for your daughter, does she have some friends herself where she could go for an odd day?

Nooo 13 yrs olds still need looking after as I think at this is the age where their minds get inquisitive  and I think its too risk to leave even the most grown up mature 13yr old all day (we were all that age once) I feel bad leaving my 16 yr old and 4 days he is in college but his laast of 3 sisters has just moved out too

But too old for a child minder but there are school holiday clubs and you can claim tax credits toward them too (i found this out when my son turned 16,

Im with Louise try the benefits expert and I hope you sort something soon its such a worry x

hi there

well the whole situation started due to being on JSA and having to apply for all these jobs that are fulltime via the WWP.

I will try the benifits expert, only been in this job since May this year, brilliant untill the summer hols came along. As for going to friends during the summer their parents would not take to kindly to other peoples kids turning up for free childcare (lol pack lunch in hand and a DBS form :) ..)

had a look at school holiday clubs and cannot find one although camp beaumont as an example now take childcare vouchers it is residential...so perhaps the government should look at summer boarding school camps ha ha ... mmmmm????

not very professional but hopefully they will sack me.....
