Hi yummymummy1989

Have you had a look at our article on Grants and Loans for Adult Learners? There may be something of use there.

Have you spoken with the college about this?

Please let us know what you have tried. Sorry but I have not been in this situation and all I can suggest is the charities on the article above.

Good Luck

Hello,

I too wanted to return to further education and had got a place on a Level 4 Certificate in Counselling. Everything was fine until we were told we had to pay a university of fee of £145 - of which I wasnt entitled to help for. Because of this I couldnt go back either. I was very disappointed but couldnt afford that at the time!! It a bit demoralising when you really want to better yourself as a single parent. Have you any idea why you are not entitled to help for this access course to nursing. I assumed if you were of a low income, and wanted to do a course like this you got a concessionary fee on the course fees. Especially if you get tax credits. Im not totally sure however. Sealed

Hi there,

I am a lone parent currently on the Access Course and I work part/time The college was awarded funding for people on low incomes which meant that I did not pay the full fee. Unfortunately there is little or no help for anyone over 25 in further education, the Adult Learning Grant no longer exists  There are a lot of single mums on our course taking the nursing pathway, can you go to your local further ed college and discuss your problems with the Access tutors there ? I cant speak for all colleges, but the tutors at mine were incredibly helpful to me, and gave me a lot of encouragement and practical advice.  Good luck

Thanks kitty cat and glad to know you are getting on well at college. Some parent I know got small private grants which helped with their fees from local charities.

Well done yummymummy and I am glad you are enjoying it but how sad that you had to sell some possessions just to manage it. Good luck, your determination will be a fantastic asset.
