To vaccinate or not to vaccinate!!

Hi

I'm sorry if there is a post on this already running or if I have put this is in the wrong forum..

My son has associate wheezing disorder (one step below asthma). This is controlled by inhalers. He has checks every 6 months with the nurse and for the past 6 months plus he has hardly needed his inhaler, which is great.

However, when he had his last check before Christmas the nurse said I should think about getting him vaccinated against swine flu.I know everyone reacts differently but a friend of mine got her son vaccinated last year - he needed two injections and was really poorly for 2 weeks.

She gave me some literature to read but I just not sure what to do. I'd be grateful to hear if any one has given their children the vaccination and how they reacted.

Thanks! :)

I had youngest vaccinated last winter as he had an asthma attack in the summer.  He had flu in October, before the vaccine became available, and he had another bout after the vaccine.

I've not had him vaccinated this winter, although I'm under pressure to do so.

I too don't know what to do.  I'm trying to feed them as healthily as I can (he's fussy), and they're all on vitamins - which they probably don't need, but it makes me feel I'm doing what I can!

Hi. I know my niece and nephew had it. Niece age 4 was fine, no reactions, but nephew age 1 was really poorly over Christmas, resulting in high temperature which couldn't be controlled. However, saying this, he was also diagnosed with tonsilitis, so if he had this before the jabs, that could well be the reason he reacted in this way.

Thanks for your reply sparklinglime

It's a hard one isn't it?!!! I'd prefer not to go down the route of vaccination but I just don't know if that is the right thing or not.

I have some echinacea drops for children so will try those, and I'll dose him up with  vitamins.

Thanks.

I use echinacea, not seen the drops, which I might try.

A friend's son has just been vaccinated and he's having a rotten weekend with a high temperature - second one I've heard about (was discussed in Scouts on Thursday too).

Thanks alisoncam

I hope your nephew is ok now. Tonsilitis is horrible especially when they are as young as your nephew.

Hi mamaoftwo

It's hard to know what decision to take, isn't it? And I guess only someone medically qualified can give you some clear guidance. I have not heard of anyone having an adverse reaction to the injection, but then it obviously happens, as you found out in the case of your friend's son.

Sorry I can't be any more helpful. Have any members had their children vaccinated or had it themselves?

I have echinacea for juniors from Holland and Barratt. You can put the drops into warm water (but I have read that you can mix them with regular drinks too to disguise the any taste).

Hi Louise

Thanks for your post.  Ultimately I know it is a decision I have to make based on information I gather. It's nice to hear what everyone else has to say too. Very glad I joined the site as it's just nice to throw these questions/problems/anxieties open to others in similar situations. It's like being part of a big family. :)

Yes it is like a big family, that's a lovely way of looking at it!

I had my daughter vaccinated with both the swine flu one last winter (myself and my other daughter were also recommended to have the jabs at the same time as we were in the same household) and the seasonal flu.  This winter she has had the seasonal flu (which also contains swine flu this time around) and on both occasions she was fine - none of us had any reaction.  As her immune system has been severely compromised due to chemo, I felt it was far too big a risk NOT to vaccinate - I guess we all have to take the decision for our own situations on the balance of the risks we perceive.

There was a very interesting discussion on the radio about flu and swine flu today. There was a GP and a homeopath on with the interviewer and they talked about prevention as well as mentioning vaccine. Click here for the listen again facility; click under where it says Latest Show, altough if you want to listen tomorrow or the next day you will obviously have to go back to the January 10th show Wink

The show starts at noon so fast-forward the cursor as the flu item started at 1.10.

My son is having his next week, so long as the perscription for the vaccine gets in stock at the chemist.

Younger ones are now being invited in - I happened to call in for a repeat perscription and asked...
