Hello nate2012

It all depends on how old your son is. Once he reaches the age of 5 you are expected to look for work actively and there is Job Seekers' Allowance in the meantime. Until this age you can claim Income Support and this may enable you to get your qualification.

Please send an email to our benefits expert by clicking here, and include details of the age of your child, and your housing situation, eg do you rent and how much is your rent and how many bedrooms you have.

Hi

If you leave your job voluntarily they may decide that you won't be entitled to benefits.

It is a very difficult position to be in.

Sparklinglime - surely that would only be the case if the child was older than 5?

I essentially had to stop working when my exH left as my job became impossible and it never even came up as a question with the benefits people.

I think I am right in saying that a lone parent with a child under 5 is entitled to Income Support even if tbey have left work voluntarily. However, it is a very different story when the youngest child hits 5. Do consult the Benefits expert for individual advice Laughing

Sorry, yes, that is where a child is over 5.
