Hi, started a temp job last week, and over the weekend my son became very ill with recurrent toothache. After not having any sleep all weekend, and seeing my son in agony, despite antibiotics and pain relief, I could not go into work today. I had no one to take care of him. I rang the dentist first thing this morning, and he gave him a second lot of antibiotics and has now put him on the urgent list for teeth removal. However, I rang my agency and told them exactly what was happening. She got back to me and said the client needs someone to cover at all times. Now don't know whether I have a job to go or not. What is going to happen if my son falls ill again? Anyone know what the rules are if you have to take time out when your kids are ill? How will the js view this? Absolutely fed up Cry

personally I would say I was ill - if you have no-one to look after your son this may arise at any time - it is a difficult one because I do have people to look after my kids but i am lucky they are in good health so I very rarely take time off anyway - sorry don't think that is much help

I always thought employers had to give you unpaid leave to look after children, as you work for an agency I am not sure if this is a different rule but surely parents can not be discriminated against in this way. I have been very lucky with employers as whenever I have had to have time off to care for angel they have allowed me to take it as holiday or pay the time back in hours owed. At one very generous employer we even had 5 days a year 'dependents leave' to use for such events.

I dont think the job centre can be unfair to you if you lose your job because of this though.

That's a great link, Surviving Mommy. Have a read of it, Domali9803, it does seem to depend on your contract.

In the meantime you need to find out what is going on and if you still have the temporary job. I do hope your son is soon better.

Hi and thanks for the replies. Well I've lost the contract, so its back to signing. Got an appt with personal advisor in the morning, but already on the jobhunt anyway. My kids have always had at least 99-100% attendance, so it was very unusual. Oh well, onwards and forwards! Thanks people xx

Hi, also the other problem I have is, do I put that I only lasted one week on my cv? Really don't want to, to be honest, as it makes me look unreliable and unprofessional dosen't it? What do you all think? Need to be updating my cv, so need to get on with it tonight. Thanks!

Hi again,

Just put it down as a temp job in June 2012, it could have only been a week's work on offoer, for all anyone knows Smile

Hope you make some headway with the advisor tomorrow.

Hi,

Well the advisor at the jobcentre just asked me to sign a few forms, photocopied my i.d. and said I need to sign on Monday! I asked if he knew whether I would be entitled to jsa and he couldn't say. Depends on what the agency say I suppose. I won't go into details, but after having time to sit and think things over, something isn't right as things don't add up. Mainly due to what the agency said...never mind, it's out of my hands now, can only go forward.

Does anyone know of any family friendly businesses or organisations? xx
