Hello zippy

All parents of young children have the right to ask for more flexible working hours once they have worked for an employer for more than 26 weeks. The employer must seriously conside the request and only reject it if there are "good business reasons". See here for chapter and verse.

Do you have a union at work? They may be able to help in this.

It is worth looking at before and after-school care as well as holiday provision at any of the primary schools you are considering

Hi. If you're on JSA, then you are allowed to do 16 hours. I'm not sure about the mortgage or anything, but I shall send a link for the 1-2-1 money section, who'll be able to advise you, but as it is the weekend, you wont hear from them till next week.

I'm on income support at the moment but got told by the cab that i can only do 15 hours, if i do anymore it will make me worse off, but thank you if you can send me the link that would be very helpful thanks.

Yes if you are on Income Support then you can work 15 hours a week or less (although you lose some of your Income Support). Once you take a job for 16 hours you move onto Working Tax Credit.

Your mortgage: at present they will just be covering the interest element of your mortgage and the mortgage lender will be regarding this as a temporary state of affairs, I assume, although there is presently no limit to the amount of time the benefits system will cover this for people on Income Support.

Get together details of your present income and also what the wage for the new job would be and the mortgage payments if you had to make them yourself, and email the Money Advice people (click here to get the link) and they will be able to do the calculations for you.
