I have to tip my hat to Looby for this one, as she was mentioning Mastermind specialised subjects. What would yours be? it can be as funny or obscure as you like.
Mine would be Little House on the Prairie
Perhaps MASH - the series rather than the film
At least not MASH potato, sparkling. Who was your favourite character in it?
Hopeful, you would scoop up loads of points on round two, which is general knowledge
Labour .... The baby pushing kind
I remember watching MASH with my mum!
Think mine would have to be Useless Information. I'm one of those who can answer obscure questions about weird things. I put it down to reading lots!
Or I'm just strange :-)
Hawkeye and Trapper John a close second...
Perhaps labour might be a good alternative one here too!
Ha ha I like this thread!
When I was young, we used to play Mastermind, I know I know you all think I must be terribly clever, my specialised subject was.....
Topsy and Tim! I knew everything there was to know about them. I adored the books and the pictures, I looked up the books the other day (there are newer versions out now and I don't think they are half as endearing) and I saw some old pictures and my love for them came flooding back.
da da da DAAAAAAAAH
Good evening and welcome to Mastermind. Our first contender please. Your name?
"Anna from One Space"
And your specialised subject?
"Topsy and Tim"
You have two minutes on Topsy and Tim, starting....now. In the book Topsy and Tim go to Hospital, what has happened to prompt their visit?
Well?
One of them broke their leg but I forget which one!
x
My specialist subject would have to be Dick Francis novels - I loved them growing up although I don't have them anymore. I remember key things like - don't eat a polar bear's liver or you'll die of vitamin A consumption (first catch your polar bear!) and what to do if you're trapped in a hot car in the desert for days.....highly useful stuff!!
My real (as in job) area of expertise is vocal technique although I am getting quite knowledgeable about eye cancer (get your eyes checked yearly peops - with dilated pupils and photos if poss).
Actually thinking about it, DS1 could probably be a specialist subject in himself. He was described as "complex" by his teacher the other day!!
Love Gem
x
Ermm ermmmm, it was Tim and he fell out of a tree and bumped his head and as usual although he was worried, it all turned out ok in the end because everyone was really friendly!!
OK, time to 'fess up, I couldnt even remember the book, however I googled it and as soon as I saw the picture it all came back to me Oh i love them.
da da da DAAAAAAAAH
Good evening and welcome to Mastermind. Our first contender please. Your name?
"Gem from One Space"
And your specialised subject?
"Dick Francis novels"
You have two minutes on Dick Francis novels, starting....now. Francis' published his first thriller in 1962 called Dead Cert where was the story set??
Maidenhead! I love Dick Francis! :-)
What a great thread. I must have it on the brain, however, as last night I dreamed I went into a museum shop and and the lady said come this way, and they took me into the back room and told me I was going to be asked questions on the specialised subject of King John. I was wildly racking my brains about Magna Carta etc and even in the dream thought about the old joke "Where was Magna Carta signed? At the bottom!" Then I thought about the Shakespeare play and how my eldest had told me that in his day it would have been pronounced "Shacker-Speer" Thank heavens I woke up
Anyone else got a specialised subject? Looby and Hopeful, I know you are good on general knowledge so maybe you could give us a general area such as History or Geography.
Great thread guys,
I am useless at retaining information so I would be rubish at this, but if I had the brain capacity my subject would have to be either 'Friends' or the Austin Powers movies, yeah baby!
The answer I was looking for was "Set in the world of racing"!
I have never read his novels, are they all set in the world of racing? Sorry hopeful, I don't know if it was Maidenhead I was scanning Wikipedia!
pq, who directed Austin Powers?
hopeful - who is the main character in Driving Force by Dick Frances
Louise - who was John Lackland?
They are all set in the world of racing, yes! :-)
Don't remember the name, but it's about someone with a transport business I think.
It's a long time since I read Dick Francis
John Lackland: not, as you may think, the owner of a High Street shop sellingplastic kitchen goods (haha) but possibly King John's nickname, Anna?
PQ: da da da DAAAAA: who played Ross's dad in Friends?
By the way, Hopeful, one of the questions on University Challenge this week was how many vertebrae human beings have!!!!
The main character in Driving Force is this guy who used to be a jockey who now has a load of horse boxes that go all over the country and I imagine to be very shiny!
Most of his characters are himself so therefore the same character, sort of moralistic, a bit sexless, with various specialities (architect - on of my personal faves!, survival expert, actor, trainer, photographer, private detective....)
Did you know people think his wife wrote them? He did stop writing when she died...
I do love friends too. I'll let Pancakequeen answer Louise's question and pose one of my own. What's Phoebe's sister's name and profession?
x
I loved the architect one! And he did not stop writing when his wife died, but continued together with his son, Felix, who has now taken over the stories (although not quite as good, but I still enjoy them).
I know the answer to Louise's question, but I won't spoil the fun.
And there are 33 vertebrae (or 26 if you count the fused ones from the sacrum and the coxyx as one each). :-)
You are too good for Uni Challenge, Hopeful, Jeremy Paxman was quite happy with the 33 answer
Calling PQ to the black chair.......da da da DAAAA
I am way not good enough for University Challenge. I love watching it and if I can answer between 5 and 10 questions I feel I've done alright. More than that (has maybe happened twice) and I start feeling clever. It's amazing what a variety of stuff they all know!
Yes and they are all soooooo young. I watch it every week. Some of them are very eccentric. Occasionally there will be a question they can't answer and I can....because it is a question about something pretty folksy from the 1970s, for example, or about terrible TV
Hi all,
Stepping up to the black chair........
1. Jay Roach directed Austin Powers
2. Elliot Gould played Ross's dad in friends (I think?)
3. Phoebe's sister is called Ursulla, not sure what she does, I remember an episode where she was in a blue movie!
As predicted I had a little help from wiki to complie the above answers!
Ursula is a porn actress (and sometimes a waitress) :-)
Not far off then?
The main character in Driving Force by Dick Frances was Freddie Croft and Yes hopeful, he was someone in the transport business, he was a Trucking company owner! Well done you!
John Lackland was Kings John's given name (Norman French: Johan sanz Terre)
Here is another one, which you will probably all know, but it still makes me giggle!
da da da DAAAA...........da...na.....In Friends what did Phoebe change her name to?
Was it Regina Phlange....or something similar....ha ha!
Sorry pancakequeen but I have to take your first answer which was incorrect, Regina Phalange was her alter ego.
The correct answer is Princess Consuela Banana hammock!! hee hee! Very very funny!
Here's one on general knowledge - da da da DAAAA
‘I Could Have Danced all Night’ and ‘Get Me to the Church on Time’ are songs from which musical?
Ooh I know that, me me me! *jumps up and down with one hand in the air*, now if I told you the answer, wouldn't it be luvverly?
That would be My Fair Lady......
A film I have never watched, well all in one go anyway!
Well done Looby The reason I am familiar with it is that my parents had the LP of it and my sister and I used to sing along and learn all the words.
da da da DAAAAAA, general knowledge section:
What do the following have in common: Barak Obama, Desmond Tutu and Mother Theresa?
Are they all noble peace prize winners?
Yes they are! you are all too clever
I will see if I can think of a harder one......AND NO WIKI-CHEATING ANYONE, Scouts honour
Name five Dickens novels whose titles contain the names of the main character in the book
*twirls imaginary moustache and sniggers* mwah ha ha ha!
uhh.
Nicholas Nickleby, Little Dorrit, Oliver Twist...., Martin something I think... *thinking really hard here*
You have a wicked streak in you Louise!
Pass.........
Wow hopeful well done, I was passing on that too pq!
Ok here's one......General Knowledge........da da da DAAAAA......
What is the diameter of the moon?
*not feeling at all guilty at setting an etra-hard question*
Anna, that is a demon of a question! And I have no idea for even a guess so I will say something off the top of my head and say ten thousand miles.
I'll have to ask my daughter!
The diameter of the moon is the length of an imaginary line going from one side of the surface through the centre to the exact opposite side of the surface. It is twice the length of its radius.
Are you all very impressed?
You are spot-on! I don't suppose that was the answer Anna wanted, though, tee hee.
So are there no takers for the full Dickens answer then?
Ok here is another question: Which actor has played all these roles: Winston Churchill, Willie Whitelaw, Roosevelt, Mussolini, Pontius Pilate and Dudley, Earl of Leicester? I have missed out his most well-known TV role from this list (more evil laughter.....)
I've decided that my decision not to enter Mastermind is the right one.
No idea.
Sparkling, you could be the scorer if you don't want to be a contestant
is it a comedian? i have no idea.
and i am very upset about having a c-thread in september.
Louise, sorry your answer was incorrect.
Hopeful, your answer was correct however I can't accept it!
The answer I was looking for was...........
The diameter of the moon is 2,000 miles (and the surface of the Moon has about the same area as the continent of Africa!)
Louise is the answer to your question - Dale Winton?
Erm not Dale Winton. I will tell you the actor's most famous role then you will get the answer: Siegfried in All Creatures Great and Small.
(Hopeful, I know mentioning the C word before December is not a popular move, sorry, but one of things we do is encourage people to plan things moneywise and so that's why I am doing it now...there is no need for anyone to buy anything, just to think about any money implications)
I KNOW!!!!!!! Robert Hardy!
I loved that series...
Hurray, sparkling, you are CORRRRRRRRECT, as Magnus Magnusson used to say
Thank goodness. I was beginning to doubt it after my enthusiasm!
My specialist subject would be 50 Shades of Grey
What colour was the red room..... errrr Red?
lol
What a fun thread idea! I know lots of little things about a lot of things, so I'd have to have general knowledge. Jack of all trades, Master of none, that's me!
