Jack of all trades

When you separated and were first on your own, did you have to change your whole daily routine to encompass all the chores the other parent took care of? Were there things you didn't know how to do and had to learn from scratch? (eg cooking, changing a plug, checking car tyre pressure, sewing on a button, decorating) Has being on your own made you more self sufficient or feel less confident about these things?

I have said before about how I am going to cooking lessons, I have cheated a bit though as my Mum does any sewing for me, I dont know what my ex does as I always looked after the car for her (but thats her problem)

Yes it's funny how within a partnership we develop different skills. Years ago I used to work for a bank and often saw older people who had been bereaved, unable to cope with doing other things, one lady had no idea how to pay a bill as she had never had to do it all her life.

Let us know how the cookery night class goes, Gamma, what are you making?

My ex was pretty useless round the house anyway so it hasnt affected me much, the big difference I found was time, I didnt get any to myself. However this is not as bad as a friend of mine, she says that when her husband left the only extra thing she had to do was feed the cat in the mornings!

That's certainly an eye-opener, Tigerlily. I suppose as more and more people are single, more of us will learn a wider range of skills?

Oh yeah! I would LOVE to do a basic car maintenance course just so I didn't feel so ignorant. They used to do an evening class in it at the local FE college but don't now - I'm sure there would be so much demand! Fi x

I've always been ok with a bit of carpentry, putting shelves up and putting cupboards together. I can hang wallpaper too. My Dad was in the building trade and was a jack of all trades, so anything I can't cope with, plumbing for instance, I call on him. I don't have a car yet, so that is a hurdle I have to cross.

Rose that's fantastic! Better keep it quiet or we will all be getting you round for our carpentry.

I am lucky with my car a my neighbour is a mechanic so he can do most jobs and I know he will be fair towards me
