Pets

princess

Hi,

Just wondered how many of us have got pets for our kids only to end up the one who walks, feeds, cleans and pays the humungus vet bills for them!! :)

When my boys were young, I got us a dog, to encourage us to do things as a family. It lasted all of 4 weeks, before the boys lost interest in her. Still got the dog.. and the lads have left home now.
Next came the fish!! they faired a little better, that lasted a couple of months. Just mananged to rehome them!
Now... its a rabbit, my little girl wanted one for her 5th birthday. I knew she wouldn't be able to take full care of her, but yest I asked F to pass out her food bowl and water bottle, to be told she would later! AAAAARRGHH!
After being a mum for 23 years, I still haven't learned that lesson where.. yes you get your kids pets... but you'll be looking after them as well as the house and kids!!
Anyone else done this?? :D

Ha ha, hi princess, i know exactly what you mean! :D

We have gone through
fish - daughters friend fed them whole can of fish food - they died
hamsters - daughter never cleaned them, made too much noise at night in her bedroom, bit her - they got sent to my cousin!
kittens- i should have learnt!! I thought it would be nice to have two cats, so when daughter went for weekend visit with her dad, she would be happy to come home and we would feel like a family, she loved the idea. We chose them, bought them home and they ripped her dressing gown, pooed on her bed, weeeed on the kitchen floor etc etc!! We still have them tho, they are 7 or 8 now, but she gives them no love or affection as when they sit on her they do that padding thing and pull the cotton of her clothes. I have decided to give one away as she needs more tlc, i feel bad as a cat is for life and not just for Xmas etc, but hopefully i am doing the cat a favour!!

I would warn all parents, questioning whether to get your little sweethearts the pet that they pester you about, only do it if YOU want to walk, feed, groom, love, attend to, pay vet bills and spend extra money at supermarket for. Because princess is right YOU will be the one dealing with it!

You need to do it the other way. Get the pets YOU want, and then tell them that they're theirs. lol I have two dogs, and the Sussex Spaniel is a right burger! They are her dads family breed, so she has always been told that Betty is hers. Not that she feeds or walks them, but Betty always get's Em's left over sausage before Pumba gets a look in. And, if Betty leaves a present in the morning, and I tell her off, Em will tell me off for shouting at HER dog! lol

The other week, Betty very kindly wee'd on my sofa, I shouted at her and took the huge chaise lounge cushion off to put outside to clean. Emmie said about her being her dog, and that i shouldn't shout at her, so I said 'are you going to clean this?' and she said 'no', so I said, 'well in that case, she's my dog at the moment, and I am allowed to tell her off'. LOL

Currently we are negotiating stick insects. Have told her if she keeps her bedroom tidy, she can have one. She has, so am looking for some to come up on freecycle. Have decided when they die (which they will no doubt :( ) I can just replace with a stick, and tell her they're sleeping. Mean mommy!! LOL
