Tax Office Problems

Eeyore73

Hi All,

Has anyone else had problems dealing with the tax office re tax credits.

I phoned them 2 days after EX walked out, told them I was now single with 2 kids, and gave them an update of my wages.  Told I would receive new forms, which I had to check them and either phone or send them back.  Got the first forms, they had managed to marry me off - never been married, also the wages were £1000 out, phoned and got it corrected over the phone. Asked if I still had to send in a form, the woman said no as it was corrected and signed off.  Anyway got a new form through, now single yeah.  2 days later received a letter to say that they were going to stop my payments if I didnt send back the form.  Phoned got a very nice man, said I had phoned, he called up the details I asked why I needed to send the forms back when I had phoned, he said the woman had signed off with the phone call.  Anyway he said he would sign it off, I am hoping he has as I am now away for a few days.

Its so annoying, they said that I woud start receiving new credits back dated to the day I told them, but it took 2 weeks, also I have had 3 different amounts I am entitled to!!!!  On their website they also say I should be receiving more money than what they say I am getting.  It really is confusing.  About time it was made easy at least we would know where we stand.

Rant over.

Hello Eeyore73

A lot of people have had trouble with Tax Credits. Every time you make any sort of change they seem to be obliged to send out another assessment. A friend of mine went on holiday and was horrified when she returned to find eleven different assessments on her doormat!

If you still think you are getting the wrong amount (well I am sure you would welcome ANY amount right now) then you can either contact the, again or go to a thrid party like the Citizen's Advice who will check your entitlement. They also may have a different number to ring the Tax Credit office on, one that only advisers can use.

In the meantime you might be interested in this: http://www.taxcc.org/

When I first left my wife I also had to leave two jobs and where I was living and move two counties away.. I went from working tax to child tax, I told them everything straight away they eventualy sorted out my child tax but continued to pay my working tax, despite me repeatedly phoning them and telling them, it was actually something of a god send as it took months for my income support to be sorted out..

I had to pay it all back though!! I still am, at £10 a month until 2018 at some point..

They also thought I was self employed during the same period despite me claiming benefits and having had two jobs and gone from working tax to child tax.... which all leads me to believe there is no central data base and no department knows what the other is doing.

AND! phoning them is an exercise in patience, it's good to have a table, a chair, something to do and a cup of coffee, maybe a kettle and the jar.. and snax too if you intend to.

Fantastic advice bubblegum, the phone calls are definitely a test of patience!

Eeyore 73, although I am sure you do already, please keep all documentation for a LONG time, you never know when you might need it.  It is always worth photocopying anything you send to them too.

I got paid double tax credit for 6 months, I kept ringing them and telling them, they said 'No, I was entitled to it, due to a miscalculation a couple of years previously' I disagreed with what they were saying, but eventually gave up and started to enjoy the money (I had been putting it into a separate account as I didn't trust that it was mine).

Of course a year later, they told me they had over paid me and they wanted it back, I think I am paying them back monthly until 2016! It ridiculous. And very confusing.

Wouldn't it be nice to have your own personal advisor, who you spoke to every time, face to face, who knew your circumstances and was then able to give you upfront direct answers.

Great idea for a topic Eeyore 73 as I am sure that many people need a good rant about the complexity of tax credits!

Always remember that the person on the other end of the phone isn't personally responsible for the mess : )

Not usually anyway...

Hi All,

Yes keeping copies of everything is essential, recording dates, names and times of phone calls as well.  Dont know if I should admit it but I did use to work in one of these departments sometime ago.

They say every claim in sent to their head office, which means it goes from one door to the next, but how can they keep getting it so wrong, so many times still.  I now have a folder just for Tax Credits.  It the worst mess - why they cant just say if you are earing X amount then you get Y amount.

Hoping they havent stopped credits whilst Im away.

I had a wholly negative experience with tax credits, when I was with my wife I was doing three part time jobs all of which I declared and they sorted it out and gave me working tax credit. I told them everything gave them all the details they asked for and then when my family fell apart I went onto income support and family tax after about six months of bureaucratic hell and then after all that I get a bill for two odd thousand pounds because they told me they had over paid me.

It makes me very worried about my daughters impending seventh birthday and very reluctant to go out and find work because it seems very much safer here on income support, despite being poor and not having all the stuff I'd like, it's safe and I have all he stuff I need.

This is so weird that I only posted on facebook yesterday that I had been trying to get in touch with the working tax credit office for two months!! This is not an exaggeration. Did you know you can no longer hold or leave a message they just say we are busy please try again later!!! Unbelievable. I want to tell them thatI have been given a 7% payrise, not a fortune but i am still paying back £60 a month that they overpaid me two years ago, and I also want to know when that ends. I also have never been sent my free prescriptions card which was sent out of the blue when they knew I was single its now run out but has not been replaced (does anyone know another number for this)? So lots of queries and no answers. Help.

No there is just the main number. However my "secret tip" is that they open at 8am even on Sundays. Not many people are calling them at 8.01am on a Sunday so it is worth trying then.

Thanks Louise I thought about trying at 758 on Friday night just to annoy them but as someone else earlier on in the thread pointed out its not there fault they work for a completely disorganised government department! Will try out of office hours though its just so much easier to speak to people when the kids arent around i.e school hours. (my kids do not understand the concept that you can actually only hold one conversation at once if you are to give it your full concentration).

Dawnellen I'm paying £10 a month until sometime in two thousand and twenty something, don't recall the exact date but basically forever! just in time in fact for them to mess up my pension : )

Hi everyone, thought you might like an update. I finally got through, took Louise's advice and phoned early in the morning. Told them my details next thing I know they have put £85 in my bank so I phoned them and asked why and they said because your details have changed and I said yes but I have had a pay increase and you have given me more money. They then went on to say my monthly payments wouldnt change either. She did try to explain but I am afraid she lost me. I basically said so you are not going to ask for this £85 back she said no, so Sunday night me and the kids had an Indian takeaway for the first time since the split as a nice treat. lol x

About five yrs ago when i was still with ex & he was working P/t & at college he had been getting working tax credit paid to his employer, he then went to university full time & was no loner entitled to it. we phoned them straight away to inform of the change but weeks later the money was still going in!  i made five calls to keep telling them but they kept saying ' we have no record of this money still being paid' i had thought that if i got a different person each time that eventually one of them may actually know what to do. The last call i made the woman said to me

'look i don't know how to get this across to you there is no record of it as far as we are concerned it is NOT being paid to you & there is nothing i can do about it, i can assure you that it is not on any system we have, i can only say to you again we are not still paying it so you can forget about it'

i gave up, i couldn't believe it i had tried speaking to different people & they all said the same, the last woman said it to me in a tone that was saying just forget it we can't track it!    so that's what i did, for three years we got that money until one day it stopped, but never any come back, they simply didn't know they were paying it, how on earth is that possible!

I was relieved when it stopped & felt very thankful that we had been so lucky for so long, it came at a time when we struggled most with ex training to be a nurse at uni, he was actually working over 16 hrs a week but as a student nurse & it was not included if you are a student. I don't actually know what we would have done without that money & funnily enough it stopped at a similar time to ex finishing.

These things are often a mystery....Glad it helped at the time though

Has anyone else had to set up an extra password, well two actually, with the Working Tax Credit people? When I phoned the other week I had to go through this system of setting up an extra security question, she was adamant that I should not write it down and that if I forgot it before next time then woe betide me.

They asked me where my first holiday was! I thought it was trick question, they said no we asked you as a security question / password and you need to give me the right answer. I actually got the giggles because i couldnt believe it, I took a wild stab and said "X" and it was right. Smile To this day I am convinced they were having me on.

(Moderator: I removed the holiday venue as it is a password)
