Just got a keyboard and one of those healter skelter things with balls in them that you tune over, my daughter wanted one, my son asked for a keyboard.

I've been getting stuff from eBay and my local charity shop, bit by bit, dribs and drabs. Sometime before Christmas I will go and spend about £30 in this really nice Toyshop in Conwy, it's like an old toyshop like I remember when I was a kid full of stuff from under a quid to over a hundred, in fact they have a rocking horse downstairs that costs a couple of grand.

Mine are seven and five, and they have pretty simple demands thankfully. My sister has been taking them to see Father Christmas each weekend in the various garden centres around here and reporting back to me what they have been asking for... My son wants some red boots, thigh high red boots, I despair! and a keyboard and my daughter wants a snowman .. ? but there you go.

Bubblegum sounds as if your children have seen Santa more than once. HAS anyone else been to see Santa this year? Has anyone ever worked in a Grotty...sorry, a grotto?

They know he's not the real one, as my son pointed out, he could see his real beard under his pretend one... They have been to see more than one as my sister is addicted to those garden centres for stuff for her garden, so I think she is just using my kids as an excuse to go shopping every Saturday.

I read this some place recently and it made me laugh but it was someone's letter to father Christmas and it went, Dear Father Christmas please could you just give me the naughty girls list this year.

Yes I was wondering whether your children had waited till Santa number two or three had asked them what they wanted and said "Look! I told you last time!"

So has no-one ever done a part time job with Santa?

That's right, he could get a job in panto! By the waym i read in the paper the other day there is a school in Warwickshire that has received lots of complaints after they did a "modern" version of Hansel and Gretel. H & G were thugs who terrorised the old lady in the gingerbread house, were given community service orders and eventually repented. Did anyone see that story?

I didn't see that one, I have to say. The idea makes me smile, yet I'm not sure how I'd have felt if they'd have done it in my youngest's school. High school though, I would have been ok with.

Haven't taken my son any grotto's this year. He knows that these ones aren't the 'real ones'. A few years ago, on the station platform, he got soooooooo excited as he 'saw the real santa, waiting for a train'! Obviously he was in disguise because he didn't have his 'proper' clothes on

When I was a student (1903? ) I worked in a large department store on Saturdays and in the holidays. I had to work as an fairy one Christmas in the grotto. The outfit was delectable and included a blonde wig. Santa went out every lunchtime and got drunk and was salacious to the fairies.... and the behaviour of the children made me think very seriously about future parenthood.

At least this year I haven't heard of any of those Christmas Adventure places that were a sham, like last year. The guys from last year have only just had their case come to court.

Are any of your chidren doing letters to Santa this year?

My son did an e.mail (just before the internet was cut). They ask what date you would like to receive an e.mail back from Santa etc, and my son put the 5th Dec. It hasn't arrived  I e.mailed them on Tuesday, and they said they would send one straight away.
I'm still waiting
To be honest though, my son hasn't mentioned it, so i'm keeping my mouth firmly closed ;)

My son is crafty!!! Just now he says, 'On Christmas day, I am going to open up my presents VERY carefully, and put the wrapping under the tree', (so it doesn't look bare). I say, 'thats a good idea'. He then says, 'just so I remember what I'm going to do, I should open a present now'. (Do I have idiot written on my forehead)
Now he says, I will cry if I can't it, and my reply????? Go, and get some tissue from the bathroom then. I'm all heart

One more week at school, yesssssssss. I'm looking forward to the 'not rushing around' bit, but I'm dreading it, as he'll be sooooooooo hyper.
I bought some 'snow' for the windows, (never done this before). I cut out a star, and sprayed that, then I sprayed a reindeer etc. For my first effort, it's not bad, he rated me, and gave 8 out of 10 :D Might not be perfect, but we both had a lot of laughs doing it.
Have a good day

I am really lookinf forward to xmas and we are having a very chilled afair this year. The kids saw Father Christmas today at a friends school fayre and a great grotto it was too with a very authentic looking man!!!!
I only take them to one grotto per year so they don't work out what is really going on.
All my order pressie have arrived in time which is a real relief and Iam feeling quite calm, although I have a lot of work to finish off in the next week to ensure ths xmas is chilled!

I bet the kids had a fab time today :D So glad that your order arrived. You can now breathe deeply, and relax. Its great that you are organising for a chilled xmas, (I always plan one of those, and get incredibly stressed, even when there is nothing to stress about)!!!!
Are your parents coming to yours, or are you going to them, or just having the xmas with the kids?
Hope you're having a lovely weekend, (sounds like you are).

Yes I thought of your son during XFactor, alisoncam, Stacey will still be on tonight though, and it should also be my favourite bit of the whole series: the group song by some of the worst auditionees!

Hi Alisoncam
Thanks for the post. My parents are coming to stay next week for a few days but they are staying with my brother for xmas (he lives in France and is all alone for xmas this year) so it will be quiet but I am really looking forward to that as it has all been so hectic in the run up. The kids are exhausted and still have a week of school/nursery to go!
We always meet up with friends on xmas day if we are in Bristol which the kids love so that will be nice - hot chocolate and a chat and a sharing of new toys etc! My parents do a fantastic advent calendar for my children with sweets, clues and presents in it so that really builds their excitement which is nice.
The santa's grotto we went to was fantastic (just at a school fayre) but a very autentic santa with 'homegrown' beard etc (no fake bits in site) and a lovely mystical air to him when he spoke to the children! he talked about remembering what excelent mince pies he had eaten at our house last year. They even had an official photographer so I will put the photo in their stocking too which will add to the mystery!
Cheers C-L

Well blow me down, last night, my little darling announced that secretly he wanted Joe to win (his nose grew as he was saying it)
Didn't do much of anything at the weekend. The normal washing, dinners etc, but didn't even venture out. I have had pain in my back for the last few days, (osteoporosis). Feeling slightly better, but I also think the cold doesn't help!
Did you have a good weekend Louise? Uhmmmmm, could it have been a PJ one.

Alisoncam funnily enough I nearly asked you about having a PJ day? I went to some friends on Saturday night, it was great fun and we had a Chinese with all different dishes. Sunday was almost a PJ day. I got up late and went to bed early, had to watch XFactor from the Saturday online as well but I finished everything for Christmas, Yey! When does your son finish school?

Hi Louise
My son finishes on Friday at 3pm. Today, it is his school party, so normal clothes on, and biscuits were taken in. I remember our last week at school for Christmas, we were allowed to take games in, but times have changed I guess. (I am talking donkeys years ago mind)
Was drooling over the post about the chinese. I was chatting to someone on Sunday, and got on the subject of curries and chinese. I could easily have wolfed a chinese down then. (still could actually). crispy duck with the delicious sauce. Mouth watering again :D
Has your eldest finished uni yet? How about your youngest son, when does he finish?
Still got few things to do before totally sorted for Christmas, but not much at all really.
Take care

It took ages to do the wages. But at least now I don't need to think about them until 5 January!

I've put envelopes in for three weeks for me  We've sort of never really discussed holidays - although they know I'm here if they need anything, and I will be looking after their cat for part of the holiday. I'm not setting my heart on three weeks though. I do have fingers crossed :D

I'm looking forward to Friday, although we're all going to have a haircut after school (which I'm hoping I will have three weeks wages...), and then youngest has the football party in the evening.

Saturday we're having an end of term party - although as everyone usually comes straight from school, I'm not sure how successful this is going to be - which will be my fault, of course 8-) for booking a haircut in January (I'm desperate for a trim, so is the eldest, and then there's no appointments until after Christmas).

I'll just be so glad to not have to get them up each morning.

Alisoncam my boy has finished all his Uni lectures but he has a part time job so not coming home till next Monday, my 15 year old finishes school Thursday. I hope your son had a nice party, and maybe they will be able to take games in on Friday. As for curries, you could look at the crockpot sites you and sparkling have posted?

its my last day at uni tomorrow :) you just made me laugh as we have to take in games tomorrow to play - how mad is that?! I think they have to be games that we would share with our future classes at ends of term etc but sounds like a fun day nonetheless - the only proviso is that it has to be 'loosely mathematical' but apparently connect 4 is acceptable :) whooppee, I'll be bouncing out of bed in the morning as I should be unbeatable the amount of games son makes me play ! lol

yippee, I have survived the first term (just two more to go....), its lovely being able to relax a bit, not too much work to do over christmas. Did lots of christmas shopping today and hope to finish it tomorrow, then plan the christmas menus and everything... have arranged for son to have a new school friend to play on mon, trying to build a few more links in the village (we only moved here in the summer)...so far so good.

Bit disappointed on the counselling front. Spoke to a counselling service today (thanks for the details Louise), they sound perfect for what I need, but the journey there is quite difficult and busy, would have to allow at least an hour during rush hour. From beginning of Jan I'm at new school so can't have appointments in school hours, but I don;t think I'd be able to get to the counselling place, have an hours appointment, and guarantee being back at son's school by 5.30 pm for the end of after school club...so I've put that on hold at the moment as I know the timings would result in me getting really stressed during the journeys and would defeat all the good that the counselling might give. I still don't have enough people locally to help me out with childcare, I have before and after clubs that are fine, then a babysitter that I use when necessary but she is expensive (but I trust her so like using her), and my ex, but the time that my ex has my son are not practical for counselling - unless I can find somewhere that offers saturday appointments - can't imagine thats very likely tho...feeling bit more upbeat today, will see how long that lasts...still feel like I have lots of issues that I should address before I can move on really.

Oh dear just realised I'm on the christmas thread and I've gone off subject a bit - sorry!

Hope your kids are all loving the run up to christmas, thanks for your support as ever

I'm glad today's been an upbeat one.

We had the Christmas parties in Cubs and Scouts. I did the games we did in Beavers last week. Reading out a story after giving each 'child' a word. When I read the word they race up the hall, round a couple of chairs and back down again. With Santa, Clause, Saint, Nicholase, day, etc, they can end up doing a few laps of the hall.

Its funny how the older ones enjoy being juvenile! Even the almost 18 year olds were killing themselves laughing!!

I've had gifts and cards from the children. I'm so shocked and wonderfully surprised by that!

No more Scouts until January.

Hello Bec that's shame about the counselling practicalities. Couple of things: you could ask at your GP surgery, which would be nearer (tho probably waiting list) or you could wait till you know someone well enough to pick your son up once a week (heh heh).

However!!!! it is now the holidays and you sound really busy with getting everything ready. Your son will be so excited. Do you have some snow there? It is like a Chrsitmas card up here, BRRRR wrap up warm everyone :)
