Hi Sparklinglime,
How do you feel about the Christmas day visit? I've got a similar one requested by my ex. I'm just going to have to grin and bear it I guess and keep thinking about how much my son will enjoy it...at least it will be over by lunchtime and we can relax!
Enjoy the run up to Christmas
x
Youngest isn't impressed, but I said once they're home then we can get on with Christmas (tut, how naughty am I??!).
I don't mind. I'll just peel potatoes and get stuff ready. Shove all the Christmas paper into the recyling boxes and chuck the hoover around! Two hours goes quickly, and then I know he'll leave us in peace.
He's getting me 13 year old models, which means I won't see the 13 year old until he finishes the models... But the rest will be in the living room.
You'll be ok Bec. It does go quickly...

Thanks for the post Sparklinglime - you are so good at putting a positive spin on it all - yes it is agreat chance for you to catch up with all the chores that go with the big day and they are so much easier to get done and dusted without any children there so good for you! Time is so relative and in the whole grand scheme of things, 2 hours is nothing really and you will be all ready to give the children your full attention again once they return having sorted out the hoovering etc, ready for round two with renewed energy, smiles, cuddles etc.
How did your cleaning go the other day? And have you got your insel ariel done yet?
I did some cleaning at the weekend and a bit of gardening which was really good timing as we have snow here today which I am really excited about as are the children. And we have more forecast so I am keeping fingers and toes crossed for a white xmas! Then the hibernating can truely begin!
Cheers C-L
Claire-Louise :o :o :o
I am so impressed, you gardening in December. You put me to shame, I finish gardening in September, and start again in May time!!! I can't actually see my garden unless I lean out of the kitchen window, but I know it is full of leaves, now covered with snow.
Well done, keep up the good work
No tinsel on the car yet - vile-child from opposite me (sorry) would just take it!! :D
I have added 'take photo of tinsel' on to my time table!!
Slowly getting sorted. Cleared space in one of my built in cupboards, so there's room for eldest's camera bag, and for some Scout and craft stuff. I've impressed myself!!
Might go off to Asda now to do some shopping. I cancelled my home delivery due to lack of funds - no money until tomorrow!
Hello sparkling lime, is the weather Ok in your neck of the woods then? The gritters have been out in force here and most bus route roads are clear but the paths are like an ice rink. Did you get the shopping done? I just have a couple of errands to do. You have done well with the cleaning :)
I didn't get to the shops. It was deadly here. It hailed at about 9pm - and then it froze.
Daughter had to go for MRI scan this morning. I had two massive pieces of cardboard and a beach towel, using them as a path up to my car. I have an absolute phobia of ice and falling.
We got to the hospital early - 9.10am, and got home after 1pm (via pets at home for rabbit and guinea pig food - oh yes, and two gerbils to replace the most recently departed one).
I had to go to work. Eldest washed their cars, after me clinging onto him for dear life to get into the house  8-)
I cancelled in-laws - youngest is still coughing. Mother-in-law not impressed - they have no ice or snow there. Said I should tell her first thing when we're not going. Pointed out that I was stuck in hospital all morning and had phoned her at the earliest opporunity. She assured me she wasn't cross. (she sounded bloody furious, actually  :? but I really couldn't have phoned her any earlier...).
What I don't get is that I know Christmas is in December. I know it's on the 25th - every year. So why is it I never seem to be ready on time for it?? :D
Oh yes - I have not had anything to eat yet. Tempted to just open the wine. I aint going anywhere in this weather!!
Hiya
Yes alison - I impressed myself with the gardening and was really lucky with the day I picked (I have only done that day since the summer - it is not a regular thing I assure you!) But it did feel good to get it done and then the snow came down so very rewarding.
Sparkling- you have impressed me too clearing out a whole cupboard. did you actually get rid of the things that were in there or just move them around and re-organise? I always think it is really good and therapeutic to get rid of stuff just before xmas to make room for all the new stuff. I haven't really managed that this year. Just more and more bits seem to be finding their way out to the shed or up to the attic. We did do a car boot in the summer though.
How was your daughter's MRI scan? Did it go OK? Do you have to wait a long time for the results?
Great that your kids were out cleaning their cars. I can't believe the state of the roads and pavements here. It has only snowed once and not very much but it is extremely icey and we have not had any gritters on the pavements or roads. I think it is terrible and I hope that if anyone does fall they are able to sue the local council as surely that is what we pay taxes for???? I really feel for you sparkling as it is a real worry, falling in icey conditions and it makes me quie cross that the council don't think about that.
Anyway I have already had a rant about it elsewhere tonight so won't bore you guys with it all over again!
Take care and don't go out unless really necessary - good on you, cancelling the in laws, as you already have a lot on your plate and thew advice is not to travel unless you have to.
Cheers C-L
Clearing of the cupboard: I do have a few things piled in the living room ready to go to the Red Cross shop - it's the weather that's stopping that from happening. Mainly jigsaws, so I don't want to stick them in my garage (been lucky to have been allocated one on the estate). Bicycle helmets taken from the cupboard and put into a laundry basket and put in the garage - where the bikes are. That made a load of room, as we had six. One is mine (my bike must have just rotted by now, in the shed in the garden) and my oldest has two 8-) Having said all this the children won't wear them, which so annoys me. "no helmet, no bike" I said in the holidays - and they've not been on them since!!
While I might not be organised, I'm not at all stressed about it. It's the magic that matters, and I don't want to take that away from us...
Thank you, every one of you, for your advice, support, friendship and laughter through out the year. I value it, and I value your company. I hope you all have a peaceful Christmas, and that the New Year will be filled with positive steps - all moving us forward.
Just incase I don't get here too much before Friday.
xxxx
Thank you sparkling lime and all the very best to you and yours too :D
Hi Sparkling and all the other great members here.
Wishing you a really lovely Christmas and thank you for all your stories and support and warmth that you have shared so willingly with everyone who joins. You are a lovely bunch of people and deserve all the good cheer, glad tidings etc that I can send your way.
Have a truely great Christmas and enjoy every minute!
Big love C-L
oh my goodness I'm in a good mood - not sure where its come from but I'm having a really good week so far:) I guess son's excitement about CHristmas is finally rubbing off on me. This morning I even managed to unpack the last 3 boxes from the garage that hadn't been opened since I moved in the Summer, so I feel really happy about that. Yesterday I was totally extravagant and bought a new TV cos ex took ours when he moved out 2 years ago and so I only had a really old one. Anyway I got a really good deal and the shop manager offered to deliver and install it for me himself, at no cost! So he's been this morning and son is very happily watching Fireman Sam - thats customer service hey! Now I'm just waiting for a yummy tea to cook.
Have a wonderful Christmas everyone, treasure every moment with those gorgeous kids of yours,
Bec x
Hi Bec
I bet you'll get a lot of pleasure from the television - and that was really good of the chap to come and install it too - the little things that help.
Enjoy your tea. Still trying to decide what to have here!
We can't find the fan for the inflatable santa... 13 year old in a bit of a strop. I've said we'll look in the morning now...
But yes, I think I'm getting festive :D Just a bit scared to admit it :?
Hi Bec
Really really pleased that you are sounding so happy, and feeling it too. Great news about your tv. :D
Have a wonderful Christmas, you and your lovely son. Hope it's stressfree.
Kids excitement sure does rub off doesn't it? The wonder of magic is truely magnificent.
Take care, and all the best
Alison

Hi Claire-Louise
You too deserve good cheer, and a wonderful Christmas, and New Year. Thankyou for all the support you have offered in such a short space of time in joining us. You're great, and you are very much appreciated.
Take care, and will catch up soon.
Alison

Phew we survived Xmas! Didn't think that was going to be possible.
My son's father and a family friend joined us for dinner and we also had a visit from my daughter and her lovely boyfriend. To think, just a couple of short years ago she was doing the sulky rude teenager thing which had driven me to depair! I have a teenage son too (lives nearby with his dad)and he is still very much at that "Kevin" stage. He dropped by later but didn't say much nor open any of his pressies. Ho hum, can't win them all!
Hope you all had a good Xmas and wishing you all the best for the New Year.
XXX
Glad it all worked out in the end, harissa. Oh yes, the "Kevin" stage... my 15-year old is right in that at the moment. At least if you have an older child (as you and I both do) then you know they grow out of it in the end, but it is very trying. Chill! (as they would say ;) )
Hi Alison, Bec, Harissa and Louise
Good to hear all about your Chrismasses - they sound great and everyone sounds so jolly which is really inspiring - that Christmas magic does seem to be rubbing off on all of us and the children's excitement is such a great reward for all the hard work we have put in over the last few months in the build up that it makes it al really worth it. Plus the snowy weather helps with the Christmas spirit too somehow so it is all good, good, good.
Now for the build up to New Years - any plans anyone????
C-L
I've never really been a fan of new year. Mum would always do a buffet for New Year, so I'd always be there. Since my parents have died, somehow, it's become another day...
I never make new year's resolutions.
I really hope that 2010 brings all positive things for everyone, and that it is a peaceful one.

Hi Bec and Sparklinglime - what are your thoughts on the xmas day requests? Perhaps you can compare notes on what you are planning to do/say? I guess it is a fine line between fitting in with your plans and catering for the childrens needs/wishes. it is not easy - good luck.
